I was an "inventor" back in the early 90's and made my living that way. I'm considering getting back into the business. I wanted to find something that was a good overview of how the industry works, in simple English, to bring myself back up to speed.This book really hit the mark. The author understands and communicates the process, and he speaks from his own experience.
The book is a one evening read. It covers a lot of territory and has links to a lot of resources for in depth information and assistance.
I would recommend this book to the new/wannabe inventor as well as to people who are already in the industry but want to read a broad, reasonably complete (for a short book) overview of the industry and how it works.
Do I agree with everything said in the book? No, some things I see a little differently. Does the book cover everything? No, but for a short book it covers a lot, and the links the guy includes are great. The book is a great buy and well worth your small investment of time and money.

I recommend Bob Schmidt's book 'Inventor's Workshop' as a worthwhile book to read and then retain as a reference for any want-to-be-Inventor.
The way that Bob interjects his personal aspects in his description of his day-to-day product development also makes for easy and informative reading.
Bob also saves any want-to-be-Inventor a lot of time and effort in tracking-down data, services and supplies for patent/product development by including many useful internet addresses in handy specific topical areas of the book along many more in his 'Inventors Resources' section.
I found The Inventors Workshop to be a great low cost guide for independent Inventors. This resource is written for the newbie to develop patents and has a multitude of active links that save a lot of time.
Bob Schmidt is an excellent writer and the book is an easy read full of clear, concise and practical tips and strategies for analyzing requirements to bring an idea to market.
I enjoyed this book immensely and would recommend it to anyone who is sincerely considering patenting an independent invention.

I was expecting to learn how to manufacture and market my own invention... not to license it... which seems everyone obsessed with.

Good advice from someone that is marketing several small volume products. His suggestion to skip the adds on TV that say they will help you pattents and market an idea/ product. As he suggests, they will take your money easily and end up not doing or advicing well. This little read saved me over $10K. That's a lot for the cost of a little book.
Bob Schmidt's new book, The Inventors Workshop, seems to be a great new resource for both budding and experienced inventors. In our case we have an invention we use at home but have been uncertain on how to proceed. This book has now provided us with the roadmap.
Schmidt starts by telling of his own inventions and then uses these as examples and case studies throughout the book. To his credit he tells of lessons from both success and failure. By mapping out the process from idea to marketing Schmidt takes the reader step-by-step through the invention process from beginning to end. Along the way he tells of the pitfalls and potential dead ends to avoid, potentially saving a lot of time and money. He also includes many links to other resources that can help. I particularly liked the section at the end that summarises all of the recommended resources. This alone is of great value.
All in all, I think that this will be a great resource for anyone trying to take their ideas and turn the into a commercial reality. It has certainly assisted me with our development process.
