A new short story perfect for the holiday season...

Avery Barks is excited about the search and rescue team's annual Christmas party. The holiday event is packed full of friends and fun for both the SAR dogs and their humans. Everyone is having a ball...
That is, until a stranger crashes the party in the most surprising way.

"Christmas Party" is a stand alone short story. It involves the characters of both the "Avery Barks Dog Mysteries" series and the "Shady Springs Dog Mysteries" series. These books can be read in any order.

If you like dogs, there's a few in this 20 minute or so short story, so it's got that going for it. But unfortunately even though it seemed at times like it would become a bit more exciting and we might experience some rescue dogs in action to solve a crime at stages, the story unfortunately was bogged down with the narrator (owner of one of the dogs) character who I didn't particularly like that much who seemed to be an I think I'm better than others personality. Somehow a story about dogs, ended up being about her. It seemed like it would be really good when a drunk guy crashes a Christmas party for dog owners and claims that Santa just killed his wife. I was expecting these highly trained dogs with their handlers to use their canine abilities to catch a serious villain. But that story just fizzes out really.

I didn't buy the scene of a pack of dogs all sitting patiently while the first one is given it's Christmas presents of cookies and none of the others are trying to eat that dog's gift, fully understanding they'd get their own present in a few minutes which was not for sharing. Also stolen property would be kept as evidence, giving it to others means the person who took it when they appear in a courtroom would say, "I didn't steal anything I don't know what you're talking about." The judge would say to the prosecutor, "can you present from evidence to the court what was stolen." They'd go oh we don't have any evidence, the people who came across the accused gave the items to some old people for Christmas, they thought they were intended for them before they were stolen. "You're free to go" would be the next words out of the judge's mouth to the criminal. Well it probably wouldn't even get to court, and the cop at the scene who let it happen would likely be reprimanded, suspended or fired and perhaps even face charges of his own.

Christmas Party A Short Story Avery Barks Cozy Dog Mysteries edition by Mary Hiker Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

This is a nice short story filled with clear action and good descriptions of dogs in action, including playing in the snow and ripping wrapping paper. I especially liked the absence of vulgarities, which made reading this story all the more enjoyable. I look forward to reading Mary Hiker’s other books.
A wonderful Christmas short story. I love reading Mary's stories of Chevy and Avery and friends. They always put a smile on my face, and they always leave me waiting for the next one.
This is a short story about first responders and their dogs at a Christmas party which gets interrupted. As they rush to the crime scene it doesnt take long to reealize they need the canine officers to catch the criminals. The dogs love roamping in the snow as they chase down the leads. Fun story.
Some one is stealing Christmas presents but what is in them? They were having a party for their dogs when they hear a shout. A drunken man comes in a accuses Santa of stealing his presents. They use the dogs to follow the real thief and are surprised by the person and what's in the presents.
I truly loved this story. The Author Mary Hiker has a special way with words. Every story I've read, I fell in love with. If your looking for something to read on a rainy day or to cuddle up at night with, or anytime her stories are the ones that you want to read . Once you do you will be hooked just like me. Thank you Mary Hiker for writing some awesome and totally amazing stories.
A neat little short story for Christmas that you can work into your schedule is A CHRISTMAS PARTY by Mary Hiker. A SAR Group (Search and Rescue) is having their annual Christmas party that includes--of course--the search dogs, when it is interrupted by someone at the barn door. The party is interrupted to pursue a crime, but you'll get lots of giggles from this crime. Light-hearted and fun, especially for dog lovers.
Even though it is a short story in a series, this story stands alone. I enjoyed the way Ms Hiker places the reader into the scenes with few but effective words - just enough that everything becomes "real" but none extraneous. The only problem I have is that I enjoy a story where all the info is present for the reader to solve the mystery. However, I have to say I don't see how Ms Hiker could have drawn the lines to have such a good solution! The predicament the man finds himself in is good! (As in - I'm sitting here chuckling and shaking my head as I write this. Some people have all the luck!)
